Balfour Beatty to deliver a second phase of work on Oceansgate
24 Feb 2020
Balfour Beatty have been appointed to deliver a second phase of work on Plymouth City Council’s Oceansgate development, as the scheme takes another step towards completion.
Located at the southern edge of Devonport Dockyard, Oceansgate is a key development in Plymouth; critical to supporting economic growth in the region and the UK’s first Marine Enterprise Zone.
Securing phase two of the development marks the second package of works Balfour Beatty will deliver at the Oceansgate development, having recently completed the first phase in 2019 and is testament to the team’s engineering expertise.
The works at Oceansgate have been procured through the Scape Civil Engineering and Infrastructure Framework. This route of procurement not only optimises the speed of delivery for the scheme but allows more local SME engagement and ensures that the latest techniques in social value measurement are utilised.
Balfour Beatty will be laying new drains for the next phase of Oceansgate, which includes new offices and light industrial units. The work is complicated by the maze of live service pipes and cables in the highway and across sites operated by the Royal Navy and Princess Yachts.
Gwyn Pardoe, Operations Director for Balfour Beatty Operations Director, said: “We are delighted to be delivering these works at Oceansgate. Our expert team of engineers are perfectly positioned to deliver the scheme efficiently and safely for Plymouth City Council, whilst also providing social value to local people by increasing employment and providing skills and training.
“Having works procured through Scape allows for open and honest reporting whilst ensuring value for money and efficiency for our customers.”
Tudor Evans, Leader of the Council said: “Oceansgate is a vitally important development for Plymouth, providing new spaces designed specifically for marine businesses in an unbeatable location.
“We’re pleased to have awarded the next infrastructure contract to Balfour Beatty, continuing the successful relationship developed on the first phase. We’ll be working closely together to keep any disruption caused by the works to a minimum.”
Works commenced on 10th February 2020 with completion expected in November 2020, aligning with phase three of construction work.
